The Rules--Be Nice, Play Safe, Have Fun!

 Covid 19 update: follow current local/regional/national health regs, & have courtesy and consideration for others.  Easy peasy. And HAVE FUN!!! <--important<---

As a courtesy to other study group handlers, please do not allow your dog to meet any of the participants unless invited (they might not appreciate a strange dog walking up to them) and please maintain control of your dog for the safety and comfort of all.

All training styles welcome.  Work on obedience, tricks, basic manners, etc...

Please, no unsolicited advice but do be generous with tips when asked: lead by example when tempted to give it. We can all learn from one another.

I like to keep things simple, but we all have different dogs, back-grounds, and levels of experiences, so here's the faq.

GROUP FAQ -- updated Dec 1 2018

--> Who We Are <--

A mixed group of dog training enthusiasts, dog owners that want to get together, and people enrolled (or previously enrolled) in dog training classes that want to practice their homework or maintain what they've learned.

--> What We Do <--

Activities

Training in Place/Practice

practice obedience, tricks, manners in one general location--this activity is a supplement to, not a replacement for, professional dog training classes. You can train at any level but are responsible for your own dog and training plan.   There is no instructor, we plan, collaborate, or take turns leading an excercise or walk.

The Stouffville area has a wide variety of professional trainers to get you started. You can ask for recommendations on the group.

Dog Hiking/Pack Walks

walking/hiking with dogs under control with other dog owners

Some important notes:

Owners of Friendly Dogs: please remember that "not all dogs love all other dogs" and never allow your dog to approach another participant without permission.

Reactivity (dogs that bark/lunge/growl/pull towards dogs, people, other animals, moving objects) Reactivity is a common behaviour but requires competent professional guidance: If you haven't already had professional training, please enroll in a relevant class. You will not be alone and if you want recommendations please ask. Once you and your dog are ready for public places please do come out. If your dog needs extra space please let us all know so we can help keep everyone happy and comfortable.

--> What We Don't Do <--

Please, no unsolicited advice but be generous when asked; if tempted to give it, lead by example--we can all learn from one another.

We don't teach you how to train your dog, or offer instructions or classes--we are not professional trainers (should any one join (or become) a professional trainer they will not be acting in that capacity in this group).

We don't organize Play Groups/dog socialization as there is already a Stouffville group--(please see Stouffville Off-leash Dog Park Group) to organize a play group at Stouffville's excellent dog park (it even has a separate enclosure for the small & the old dogs), or join a puppy socialization class, or have your dog attend group daycare. Please don't combine play with training sessions or controlled walks as it is confusing to dogs and some dogs do not enjoy play groups.
